Nearly two-thirds of Ohio's fourth graders weren't reading proficiently in 2019 – a figure that hasn't changed much in the past decade and mirrors the national average, according to annual KIDS COUNT data released Monday by the Annie E. But many children enter kindergarten without the tools to succeed, and those delays can follow kids throughout their lives. Reading is an essential skill for success in school and later in life, research shows. "It was an easy sell," said Fran DeWine while the family dog – a springer spaniel named Dolly after Parton – nestled nearby. "(Lawmakers) realized that this is just an incredible way to help get our kids ready for kindergarten." Why early reading matters To pay for the books, Ohio lawmakers allocated $18 million to match what local organizations, such as United Way or Easterseals, chip in.įran DeWine has championed the early literacy program since Mike DeWine took office in 2019. Parton's Imagination Library offers these books at a fraction of their original cost – $2.10 per child, per month. "Saturation for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in counties that have done this for a long time is about 70%, so we’re really kind of on our way to that since doing this since 2019." "We’re always looking to expand the program," she said. Stark’s Imagination Library recently partnered with Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital and Aultman Hospital to provide every baby born a free copy of "The Little Engine that Could" and enroll them in the program.ĭiGiacomo said the Imagination Library has grown significantly over the last several years. "They’re high-quality, age-appropriate books," she said. Children enrolled in the program from birth will have a collection of 60 books by the age of 5. The program is a collaboration among the library district, United Way of Greater Stark County and several area libraries, including North Canton, Massillon, Minerva, Louisville, Canal Fulton and Rodman Public Library.ĭiGiacomo said Imagination Library is another tool to help parents prepare their children for school. Imagination Library launched in Stark in 2019. "So we’'e committed to providing resources that parents and caregivers need to prepare their children for success." "Literacy is one of Stark Library's values, and school-readiness is so important to children in our county," said Marianna DiGiacomo, community services director at Stark Library. Stark County’s Imagination Library provides a free book in the mail every month to more than 10,000 (or 47%) of eligible children in the county. The program is available to all children regardless of their families' income. The first book delivered is "The Little Engine that Could" and the final book is "Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come." Nearly 328,000 Ohio children – about 45% of those eligible – are currently receiving free books each month. ![]() 'It’s better to give than to receive': Dolly Parton discusses book program's legacyįree books for Ohio kids: How to sign up for the new Governor's Imagination Library ![]() I love that name, don’t you?" Now, those free books are available for children ages 5 and younger across the world – including every county in Ohio. “I just always felt my heart was always heavy that my Daddy felt like there was something he couldn’t do, because we thought he could do anything.” “Daddy didn’t get a chance to read and write and he was always kind of embarrassed by that,” Parton said. She started the program to honor her father, Robert “Lee” Parton, who died in 2000. Flash on “Life in Marvelous Times.” The record on its own has nothing wrong with it, and it spotlights one of Mos’s strongest verses. Noticeable deviations from the organically developed sound hurt the album, but the only major sin is committed by Mr. Stones Throw artists have often successfully experimented with this jumbled style of making songs and it seems that the brothers Otis and Michael do well fitting The Ecstatic in the same mold. Even in individual songs Mos and his producers toy with the tension between chaotic and ordered styles, such as on Madlib’s “Pretty Dancer,” or his brother Oh No’s “ Pistola,” where Mos spits sharp verses in between drowsy choruses. For every Madlib track with its layered samples, imported instruments, and unhinged song structure, there’s a beat from Preservation that condenses every sound tight and focused. Mos’s light touch in choosing features really leaves listeners with the feeling that the album is well-rounded, bringing just enough distinct flavor to keep the album sounding fresh.Īnother way the album succeeds as a unified whole is in its balance between extremes. The two guest spots Mos picked for the album are perfect – Talib Kweli steps in later to do justice to the label “Black Star reunion” – and the Ruler’s lines, describing the feeling of alienation of a U.S. His first track “Auditorium” begins with Middle Eastern strings slinking under Mos’s laid back flow, fading in and then returning for a verse from Slick Rick. With the momentum built, the next producer to step in is Madlib, the star player on the Stones Throw Record label and the man who could be considered the musical foundation of this album. This track folds into Chad Hugo’s menacing “Twilight Speedball,” complete with bellowing horns and tip-toeing xylophone. The album explodes open with “ Supermagic,” an Oh No-produced track laced with wailing guitars and women’s voices that sound like they come from a Bollywood musical. Instead, this album’s perspective is set on descriptions of American cities and foreign lands without providing explicit political messages. What seems to annoy critics most about this album is that Mos neglected to satisfy the listeners looking for something politically charged. This album has a unique, experimental sound, borrowing heavily from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, it sports a shortened roster of producers – seven producers spread over sixteen tracks and five of them produce at least two tracks – and Mos’s more concentrated lines leave it a focused effort. The fact that one of its biggest stars was allowing his creativity to run his rap career off its rails suggested that, despite its positives, alternative hip-hop lacked the consistent appeal of commercial rap.įor those that followed Mos Def’s career, The Ecstatic should seem like the album Mos Def has wanted to make for almost a decade. The two releases after his solo debut showed Black Dante indulging in the worst, most extreme of his experimental tendencies, and lacked the passionate delivery of his early work. If everyone could have just forgotten about the years between the release of Mos Def’s acclaimed Black on Both Sides and the release of The Ecstatic – a period that saw the flops The New Danger and True Magic – Mos, and “alternative” hip-hop, might have been better for it. It's light enough to easily move it from room to room. If you follow the directions and position the larger pad over one of the feet of the stand, physics does all the rest for you in terms of balancing. It holds extremely well! The inside edges of the holder have some sort of tacky surface that keeps the pad from sliding. I was dubious about putting the iPad Pro in it because I wasn't sure it would be held securely along the narrowest dimension, then rotated for apps that require vertical. Helpful review: “I love this well designed holder. Reviewers have noted it comes with a remote control for snapping photos, and a storage bag is also included so that the collapsible tripod - which weighs just over 3 pounds - is easy to transport. In place of a pan-tilt mount, the tablet holder attaches to a flexible gooseneck with an angle-adjustable mount at the top, so you can bend and angle the iPad to multiple positions - while this gives you lots of viewing options, keep in mind it won’t be ideal if you want to pan or tilt while shooting video. A universal phone holder is also included, and both mounts can be supported in portrait and landscape modes. The aluminum alloy rod extends from 27.6 to 62.9 inches tall, and the mount is compatible with any device between 5.5 and 12.9 inches - from the iPad mini to the iPad Pro. If you want a portable tripod for traveling, look for lightweight, collapsible legs. Other design elements come down to your personal needs. And if you want to view your screen from any orientation, choose a tablet mount that can shift between landscape and portrait modes. Adjustable angles are also important, especially if you plan to be using the tripod in multiple positions, whether that’s sitting, standing, or even lying down. For example, if you plan to use your tablet while standing, there are floor tripods that extend to up to 63 inches in height, but if you'll be using your iPad while seated, a compact tabletop tripod is a convenient, space-saving option. Start by considering how tall your tripod needs to be in order to bring your iPad to eye level. To get a correct fit, measure the width of your device or check the Apple website for information on dimensions.Įase of viewing is also key. Some mounts are universal and can accommodate every iPad model, while others are more limited in size. Tablet mounts are typically spring-loaded grips that extend and hug your device to secure it. In February 2014, a safety inspection at Terminal 6 by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration "found ICTSI Oregon to be in violation of more than a dozen worker safety codes, such as not informing employees about potential exposure to airborne lead and having workers operate machinery that lacked proper guards against flying objects." Polhemus stayed with the Port for another three years before becoming a vice president at Portland General Electric. In mid-December, the Port commissioners voted to reject the investigating committee brief, meaning Polhemus was exonerated. His murder was never solved, leading to many conspiracy theories. On November 20, 1933, shortly after the commission found Polhemus and his staff guilty, professional auditor Frank Akin was found shot to death. You'll also see your units grow in experience, awards which add perks to a unit, and gain more heroes. Your own units will of course not evolve too much over this time period, but you will get the chance to capture various enemy units and add them to your core force if you so choose. Throughout the campaign you'll see Czechoslovakia, France, Poland, Finland, and Denmark, offering quite a variety of locales and enemy forces. It seems so easy, it's right there, you can drive to the objective location on Turn 1, and yet you'll lose half of your force trying to take it directly, or burn through most of your limited turns attempting to encircle and siege the place. In a later mission fighting the French, you're tasked with capture a huge swath of objectives across the map, but ever so tempting is a heavily fortified city right next to your starting point, that you merely need to raid (simply touch the objective marker once) to complete a bonus objective. As you can imagine, it becomes difficult to cut deep into enemy territory when you keep leaving viable enemy units in your rear. You'll attack and push them back, but never hit them so hard that you wipe one out. While you can just roll in and crush all resistance, the ideal way to win the battle is to occupy points all over the map without destroying a single enemy unit. ![]() For example, early on you'll invade Czechoslovakia. While some of the bonus objectives merely involve taking the primary objective and pushing deeper into enemy territory, others are very unique and fresh. The rewards for going the extra mile are Commendation Points, which you'll be able to spend at various junctions to get special units and heroes. In almost every scenario I found myself embarrassingly overstretched on my first attempt, thinking I had things in the bag just before an enemy counter-attack cut off my lead units and ravaged them. While you can finish the campaign without doing any of these, the game is far more fun, and more challenging, when you attempt them. Accomplishing one of those objectives will require only a bit more skill than normal, but taking on both at the same time will often demand some real strategy and perhaps even a few separate runs at the scenario. ![]() In most cases you'll be offered up a straight forward objective that isn't too difficult to complete, but, critically, you'll also have at least a couple of bonus objectives that will appear tantalizingly within your grasp. While in real life many of these were small scale affairs compared to the later battles of the war, Panzer Corps 2 makes up for this by taking the quirks of the historical situation and offering up unique objectives for each scenario. The last pillar of Battle Racers is Catchup Mechanics, such as Turbulence or Slipstream. Because these options tie into the resource system, knowing when and where to attack or place a trap is always on the minds of competitive players. Players can spend air to attack their opponents, or leave devastating traps behind them with tornados. The second, more subtle difference, is the focus Riders has on non item based player interaction. This resource system creates a constant tug of war between optimizing for speed, spending for utility, or saving fuel for later and deciding which will be more beneficial on a moment's notice. There are two fuel types, Air and Rings, which are woven into the game's other systems. The most apparent difference is the use of a resource system. These elements create a unique and rewarding experience in its own subgenre of racing games which we've dubbed the ' Battle Racer '. If you’ve got the hardware, though, you should definitely take this demo for a spin! You can check it out here.Sonic Riders sets itself apart from other racing games in a multitude of ways through its freeform movement and advanced mechanics. Unfortunately, it is not terribly well-optimized for lower tier computers like my GPD Win 3, even on low settings, though I was able to get it running on my 1080ti-powered desktop! Unless you have a decently beefy set-up, you probably won’t be able to play this yourself right now. The courses are a blast, naturally, and the Mario & Sonic downhill dream course works pretty well with Riders mechanics!Īs I said earlier, Riders X is a visual stunner. On top of those, there is also a test course. ![]() One other is the Dream Racing course from Mario & Sonic 2020. The demo has four courses, three of which are taken from the original Sonic Riders. As near as I can tell, that’s all in Riders X, and implemented well. Knuckles can break through obstacle, Tails can use flight rings, and Sonic…well, he’s supposed to be able to grind on rails, but I should admit I could never figure out how to do that properly. Riders X has speed, power, and flight characters, and just like in the original game, certain elements of a course can only be utilized by one of these character types. Certain elements, like riding the wake of other racers, aren’t in the demo since time attack doesn’t have them. You take tight turns by drifting, and you get a speed boost upon releasing the drift button, which also eats into your gauge. Rings can level up that gauge over the course of the race. ![]() Your board runs on a limited air gauge that can be depleted with boosts and refilled at refill stations and through randomized ring boxes. Mechanically, Riders X feels very accurate to what I remember from my time with the first game. Only the time attack, 4 courses, and four characters are currently available, but already it’s easy to tell that this is a faithful recreation of the mechanics of the original. The characters and the courses all have a gorgeous, high-poly HD makeover. Sonic Riders X is essentially a from-the-ground-up remake of the original Sonic Riders and Zero Gravity. |
