It’s set in the early 60s, in a shabby, crumbling stage school in Covent Garden, full of terrifyingly precocious child actors and inept, downtrodden teachers, all presided over by the infamous Frieda “Freddie” Wentworth. Less so now perhaps, but a book that consistently makes me laugh is Penelope Fitzgerald’s At Freddie’s, a comic masterpiece from 1982 that really should be better known. Books were prized for being shocking or funny or, even better, both, and the promise that a book would make the reader “laugh out loud” seemed entirely plausible. There was Adrian Mole, of course, and Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the Monty Python books, Woody Allen’s Without Feathers, Geoffrey Willans’s How to Be Topp, Evelyn Waugh’s Decline and Fall. Short of creating their own event handles and UI elements (as Opera Mini does for much of the time), there’s not much that eBuddy can do to get around this problem using Java. When entering a message you get taken out of the eBuddy UI and into a full screen java text input box. There’s one big gotcha in the app, and it’s more to do with the Java Runtime than anything else. One of the flaws (for me) is the non-inclusion of Skype, which is my text IM client of choice (even though its more well known for its voice capabilities), but the inclusion of Google Talk means this still has a use for me. Once you’re all installed with your eBuddy account set up, and running (btw I like the touch on installation that asks for your language and goes online to download it), you can set up your accounts for most of the major networks, including: It also means that they have a nice archive of your logins, those of you with any security concern might like to consider this. That means no matter where you log in, all your settings, passwords and favoured IM’s are presented to you by eBuddy. This is little more than a single username and password which holds all the login details on the eBuddy server. The core to eBuddy, and its portability over multiple platforms, is that everything runs through an eBuddy account, which you have to set up to use. If you measure on results and not methods, then eBuddy is a winner. eBuddy runs in Java, and while that means a lot of people are just going to stop right there, I think that’s a mistake, as this is well coded, stable application that not only does what it says on the tin, but does it well. This Symbian version now complements the iOS and Android versions currently out there, and along with a web based version, eBuddy has an option for you to get to your IM friends and messages, no matter where you are. It’s been around in various forms since 2006. It shows that the RZ is hardly the last word in instant response it claims to be and has us asking whether the wheel really needed reinventing.EBuddy is one of many options to get to the popular IM systems on your handset – and to have one application handling multiple systems. Other than that it’s a great video and you should prepare to be shocked by the footage showing the delay between Fenske turning the steering wheel and the wheel itself moving. Now I’m no engineer but it sounds too me like Fenske has his high and low ratios confused – when he says the RZ has a low ratio at low speed perhaps he’s referring to the lower number of that ratio. Conversely, at high speeds it gets a slower ratio so it feels less nervous on the highway. At low speeds, when you’re likely to need to make tight turns and potentially cross your hands, which causes problems with the Tesla yoke, the RZ uses a fast steering ratio that allows you to swing from lock to lock without taking your hands from the wheel. So why is the Tesla terrible and the Lexus, if not great, at least less terrible? If you hadn’t already guessed, it’s down to the RZ’s variable ratio. Review: The Lexus RZ’s Yoke And Steer By Wire System Are Solutions Looking For A Problem And he then goes on to outline the RZ’s faults and how Lexus could make it better, because as is apparent by the end of the video, and our own testing, it’s not perfect. So having no doubt listened to all that criticism what made Lexus think it was a still a good idea to press ahead with its open yoke wheel on the new RZ electric SUV? We’ve already had a chance to get try the RZ and its yoke for ourselves (see link below) and now Jason Fenske, the brains behind the Engineering Explained YouTube channel, explains why the Lexus works so much better in a video that you might be pleased to hear involves no brain-melting maths on a whiteboard.īut before he gets to why it’s better, he also covers exactly how the steer by wire system works, answers the kind of questions all of us have about the biggest change to steering since tillers became passé, including whether it’s safe and whether it can possibly still deliver feedback without a mechanical connection to the wheels. I had plenty of evidence showing me that there was something wrong with this theory of the silent period. Because second language learners already know how to speak in their first language, it can be extremely frustrating for them to not be able to convey their messages for months or even years. They are also confronting a new set of sounds (phonemes). They already know how to speak in their first language, and if they don’t speak in the second language is simply because they don’t have the vocabulary to convey the things that they want to say. Children (or adults) learning a second language are not “naturally” quiet either.Recent studies on babies’ processing of language in the brain confirm that each skill supports the other. Therefore, babies and infants are as active trying to understand what they hear as they are trying to produce sounds and speak. More importantly, they learn A LOT about language by doing so. In reality, ever since they are born, babies not only perceive the language that surrounds them, but they also start playing with sounds and trying to communicate in their own way with their caregivers. The cause of their inability to speak is developmental and not related to the amount of language one needs to comprehend before speaking. Babies are not quiet they may not say complete words or sentences, but they are definitely not quiet. There are two problems with this understanding of the silent period as a natural stage in the path towards language acquisition: Since this long period of muteness followed by speech is the “natural” way with the first language, then it makes sense to assume that this is the “natural” way to go with the second language as well: let your students listen for a while and wait for them to start speaking on their own. Only when they have a solid grasp of the language are they able to start speaking. According to this way of thinking, babies spend the first years listening and trying to comprehend what they hear. The origins of the silent period idea can be traced to a comparison with the years that babies typically take before they start talking in the first language. In fact, I think it is detrimental for the language learner for many different reasons. Secondly, in the case at hand, I think that the silent period is neither natural nor necessary. What do I think today? Firstly, I think that we have to be careful with pendulum moves, for as brilliant as they may sound in the moment. Also, not only is speaking not necessary, but it should not even be encouraged or forced. Listening is then presented as a fundamental step in language acquisition speaking is not fundamental in this respect. If we listen and we can understand, he argues, we will eventually be able to speak. Īt the core of Krashen’s approach ever since has been the primacy of listening to “comprehensible input” over everything else. So after that time in the late 70’s, the pendulum swung from the very artificial teaching of grammar to a more “natural” approach (BTW, that was the title of the foundational book written by Tracy Terrell and Stephen Krashen in 1977: The Natural Approach (Language Teaching Methodology). Why were his hypotheses so attractive? Because they represented a 180° departure from the very artificial teaching that was taking place at that time (and unfortunately keeps taking place today): grammar-based language instruction. Krashen’s fresh ideas were adopted without much questioning by language educators in the US and even abroad – such was (and is) his influence to this date. Indeed, I had internalized those hypotheses to the point that they had become my norm with my students and with my own kids as well. As many other language educators, I had learned by heart – and loved –linguist Stephen Krashen’s 5 revolutionary hypotheses that changed the curse of language education forever (he proposed them in the late 70’s and early 80’s). There was a time when I believed in the inevitability of the silent period as well. The “silent period” in second language acquisition refers to the period of time when the child or adult is first introduced to the second language and the time when he or she begins to speak. In fact, my skepticism has grown so much in one particular area that I can hardly contain myself when I hear it introduced to new teachers (or parents) as an inevitable (and natural) stage in second language acquisition: the “Silent Period.” During the years, I have become more and more suspicious of “natural approaches” to second language education. In Kingdom Hearts 3 you play as young Keyblade master Sora – who you’ll be pretty familiar with if you’ve played the previous titles. It’s much more complicated than that, but that’s the gist. So, Master Xehanort, the series’ main antagonist – who's easy to identify, as he's the old, bald egg-headed man with a goatee and menacing grin – is back, and is planning to instigate another Keyblade War between the Seven Guardians of Light (the good guys) and Organization XIII’s Seekers of Darkness (the bad guys) by forging a legendary weapon called the X-blade.Įssentially, Xehanort is a bit of a jerk, and wants to plunge the world into darkness again. If all this feels like too much work, then we're here to break it down for you as succinctly as possible in one paragraph – at least where the story is when you begin Kingdom Hearts 3. There are a lot of ominous, spikey, white-haired men in cloaks, and several characters who look quite similar, so brushing up on the lore first is probably a good strategy. A lot of the story involves characters from this title, and it will save you the hassle of trying to google what the hell is going on once you get started, as I had to. If there’s anything I'd advise before starting the series’ latest addition, it would be to play not just the first two games but also Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (at the very least). who knows).Īs someone who's played both Kingdom Hearts I and II, and considers herself a lifelong fan, I felt I had a fairly solid grasp on the lore of the series – but it was evident from the moment I set foot in Kingdom Hearts 3 how wrong I was. The multi-part saga is set over various generations, and involves multiple characters (some of whom are just the same character but without a heart, or with a heart, or in the same heart. Despite the obvious charm and general feel-goodness the Kingdom Hearts series projects, arguably the most off-putting element for new players is the complex storyline and, I’ll be honest, it’s no surprise. As with any broadcast mic, the setting in which you record will have an impact on the sound you achieve, but in the Procaster we found a microphone we’d happily rely on. For any application involving speech – be that podcasts, voiceovers or video – the Procaster delivers pleasing results that don’t require masses of post-production to polish. Overall, we were very impressed with the Rode Procaster. All told it didn’t impact hugely, and was certainly no worse than any of the Procaster’s competitors, but it is worth considering. For some users, this may push it into fairly noisy territory, however in our experience that was largely negated by the high-pass filter. We did notice it can be fairly gain-hungry, requiring a reasonable boost from the preamps on our audio interface. By forcing you to go through a mixer or audio interface, as opposed direct to your computer via USB, you actually gain significantly more control over the recorded sound. The inclusion of an XLR input is what sets it apart here. Rode also offers a shock mount, available separately, which will further help when seeking isolation from wobbly desks or mic stands. It’s not a mic we’d want to be hand-holding for any length of time though, so a desk mount or boom arm would be wise purchases. To hold, the Procaster has a pleasing heft to it thanks to its all-metal construction. Performance here is aided by an internal pop-shield, however we’d always advise on the use of an external pop filter just to be safe. You also talk directly into the top of the mic, rather than the side, despite how it may appear at first. I could easily see Rode updating the software to include this functionality as well. The cardioid pickup pattern offers 180 degrees of rejection, so it’s best suited to directional use, specifically in front of one voice rather than many at a time. It’s a minor thing and you could easily just use 4 pads for one show and 4 pads for another show, for example. That would let you easily switch between multiple “sets” of prerecorded sounds for different shows. One suggestion I’ve seen is that people would like to have multiple podcast profiles for the sound pads. Hosts and producers of multiple podcasts (maybe) This dual-connect upgrade has been a common addition to podcasting and home recording microphones for the past few years, allowing the microphone to be used for multiple recording gear setups. Most audio mixers with this number of inputs don’t have multitrack recording either, but it would definitely be useful for podcasters. I don’t know for sure, but I believe there is a good chance that Rode comes out with a software update to enable multitrack recording. With four studio-grade XLR microphone inputs and four headphone outputs, intuitive controls via a large full-colour touchscreen, automatic level setting and one-touch tone controls, you can be creating an incredible sounding podcast within minutes of taking it out of the box. Update: This feature has been released in a recent update! Note: for now, multi-track recording is only available via USB. The RDECaster Pro makes professional podcasting easy. Podcasters that need multi-track editing capabilities Where it really shines for solo podcasters is if you also do live-streaming and want the ability to easily mix on-the-fly. Rode was nice enough to send me one, otherwise I probably would have just stuck with a USB audio interface. It works great for a solo podcast, but I think it’s overkill for many. These aren’t necessarily deal-breakers, but here are some things to consider… Solo podcasters Order At B&H Who should not get the Rodecaster Pro? They’re planning a software update this month (February 2019) to add multi-track recording too. They each have a nice clicky/stepped feel: There are 4 individual headphone controls and volume control for your speaker output if you use one. The top of the device is pictured above, but here’s a bit more detail: We’ll go into detail on most of these below: Rodecaster Pro Device Compressor / Noise Gate / High-pass Filter / De-Esserīasically, the Rode Rodecaster Pro is an all-in-one podcast studio that will record to a computer and SD card, automatically improve sound quality, lets you record phone calls, add in one-touch sound effects, and more – all in one relatively compact device.Aphex Exciter (4 channels would cost you $700) Why does the rodecaster take so long to export a podcast Exporting a 2 hour podcast from the RCP (v1) takes 3+ hours to copy the files to my laptop which is connected via USB-C and is a high powered brand new macbook pro with SSD.4-channel Headphone Amp (and a cable to connect it). One of the big benefits is that everything you need (and then some) is combined in one unit: So what’s all the hype is about? What’s so special? If you want to purchase one, I recommend ordering quickly (even if it’s not in stock) so you can hold your place in line. hardly used as a concrete and specific bird-name.” I suggest that, as a poetic concept, the penelops belongs to the same group of birds as the kerulos, the keux, and the halcyon. The keux is a seagull or tern, according to D’Arcy Thompson, who describes the name as a “vague, poetic, and even legendary word. Identified with kerulos as a male halcyon is another seabird, κῆυξ or κῆξ, whose name, clearly onomatopoeic, also imitates the cry of the female halcyon. Halcyons, having a fearless heart, the sea-shining bird of spring. Who flies over the bloom of the waves together with the No longer, o honey-toned holy-voiced maidens,Ĭan my limbs carry me. Both prudence and guardianship of the house are, of course, two of Penelope’s most prominent qualities. Further, Pratt points out that geese were known for their vigilance and prudence, especially in guarding their nest: Aristotle speaks of their ἤθεα αἰσχυντηλὰ καὶ φυλακτικά, ‘prudent and vigilant habits’, and, in a Hellenistic epigram, a goose on a woman’s tomb is said to be a sign of δόμων φυλακὰν μελεδήμονα, ‘careful guardianship of the house’. This connection is signaled by the derivation of her name from penelops. He argues that geese are traditionally regarded as faithful and loving mates, and it is this quality that connects them to Penelope, the proverbial faithful wife. Penelope’s delight in her geese (in her dream tale) and the extraordinary grief she displays at their destruction have long been noticed, and Kretschmer has connected Penelope’s affection for her geese with the penelops. Since the penelops is consistently mentioned in the company of geese, it must have had something in common with them, and several scholars have explored a connection between the penelops, Penelope, and geese. In other words, what follows is primarily about the diachronic (rather than historical) dimensions of Penelope, and my suggestion is that these dimensions are also synchronically active in the Odyssey. I do think this kind of figure is likely to have substantial and deep roots, but my main point is that her qualities are palpably present in the Odyssey. I will instead attempt to uncover a set of affiliations that describes Penelope as a particular kind of mythological character. I will not make any claims regarding the antecedents of Penelope as a mythological figure, or try to imagine what she might have been before the Odyssey took its familiar shape. What follows is one way of trying to reconstruct some of Penelope’s mythological background, not in a sense of origins, of something left in the past, but in a sense of something present and active in the Odyssey as we know it. They are relevant, however, in a more general way because they are about the mythological persona of Penelope, and this persona reaches its fullest manifestation in the Odyssey in Books 19 to 23, beginning with the dialogue between Penelope and disguised Odysseus and ending with their open embrace and a night together. By virtue of being concerned with questions both fundamental and overarching, the observations that follow will not apply directly to the dialogue in Book 19. In this chapter, I am pulling even further back to an even larger frame, to look at Penelope’s own intrinsic relatedness to just such a transition. So far I have argued that Penelope’s myths, above all the Pandareid myths, have special affinity to their poetic environment in the Odyssey, namely a crisis and a turning point from dissolution to “light and life,” which in the Odyssey is marked by the festival of Apollo. This feature is a great addition to Hyundai vehicles, as it helps to ensure that drivers can take advantage of the convenience of the wireless charging pad without causing any unnecessary damage. The light will turn on when an appropriate temperature is detected, and will shut off when the cup is removed. This light is designed to help alert drivers when a cup of hot liquid is placed on the wireless charging pad, as the heat from the cup can cause damage to the pad and the surrounding electronics. Hyundai has just released a new feature for its vehicles equipped with a wireless charging pad – a coffee cup warning light. Mercedes-Benz ATTENTION ASSIST® is designed to assist drivers in becoming more comfortable in their vehicles by warning them of potential fatigue-related errors and offering them assistance when they need to take a break. If the system detects common driver fatigue-related errors, it will alert the driver and encourage them to take a break from their journey. ATTENTION ASSIST® uses a variety of factors, including driver style, steering input, and the type of road surface, to determine the level of fatigue of a driver. This system’s goal is to assist drivers in keeping themselves safe by staying alert and avoiding potential crashes. Mercedes-Benz ATTENTION ASSIST® uses sensor technology and an intricate algorithm to detect when drivers are showing signs of fatigue and assist them. Stay Alert, Stay Safe: Experience Mercedes-benz Attention Assist® Attention Assist can also adjust the seat position or climate control to help the driver stay awake, and can even suggest a break or rest stop if necessary. When these signs are detected, the system will alert the driver with an audible warning and activate safety systems such as the seatbelt reminder, Pre-Safe brake, and Adaptive Brake Assist. It uses advanced sensors to detect signs of drowsiness or inattention in the driver, such as slow reactions to traffic, weaving between lanes, or drifting off the road. Mercedes Attention Assist is a safety feature that helps drivers stay alert while on the road. Mercedes accomplishes this by reminding drivers to stop and rest as needed, reducing the risk of accidents caused by driver fatigue. Drivers will be able to plan ahead of time when it’s time to take a break from driving by using this warning system. Some systems with audio alerts, for example, will notify the driver that they should take a break if they are feeling sleepy. A drowsiness alert system employs sensors to detect when a driver is feeling fatigued, and a coffee cup and message will be displayed on the dashboard to remind them to take a break. The dashboard of a Mercedes is adorned with a coffee cup and saucer that alert drivers to the possibility of fatigue. Rest When Needed: Mercedes’ Drowsy Driver Alert System This unique style is one of the most iconic features of Mercedes models from this era, and is still used today in some of the more modern models. The trademark headlights feature a round lens, similar to a cup, with a raised center, similar to a saucer. The phrase “Cup and Saucer” is a term used to refer to the shape of the headlights on Mercedes models from the late 1990s to early 2000s. |
